Learning from TV or should I say Sports TV

So I'm not really a big TV fan. I mean, I'll watch TV when I get really really bored and there is absolutely nothing else for me to do. Anyway, I slept for most of sunday and I couldnt sleep at night. I got so bored that I watched TV :) and the ESPYS was on. So in as much as I dont really watch sports either for some reason the award show caught my attention.

I'm glad I watched it too. I learned about Northern Ireland and the tension that existed/exists between catholics and protestants and its impacts on the Irish people. I totally had no idea. I especially learned about the riot held in 2001 that had kids caught in the middle. The riot was basically because a sect of kids going to their school had to cross through the other sects side of town. (I cant remember the details but imagine if catholic children were going to school in a catholic school in an area that was mostly protestant and then a riot breaks out because the dominantly populated sect decided that they didnt want the others to cross through their side of town. The pictures and clips of that day just looked really bad; kids were crying and bombs/explosives going off. Gosh! I dont know how anyone would or could really get passed that. This story comes into the ESPYs because of 2 guys (Trevor Ringland, a Protestant rugby star, and Dave Cullen, a Catholic who grew up using basketball to escape from the realities of war) who are trying to promote peace by having kids from both sects play basketball together. Makes me think again about the different ways that I (and anyone really) can contribute to making the world better. Even from the little things that are available to us like sports.
