So I work hard (sometimes I think too hard), and to unwind, recoup and to keep my womanly instincts in check, I like to read. Romance novels used to be my favorite pastime but I have since graduated to magazines. So there is Essence magazine that I subscribe to (because you can convert your unused airmiles to points). Anyway, I was reading this months issue when I saw the "top ten things we are talking about section" and this caught my eye.
"School Officials in Rochester, New York, are encouraging teachers to use Black English Vernacular, or Ebonics, in the classroom. Examples include translating common phrases into Ebonics. Officials say embracing our speech patterns will help teachers reach Black students more effectively."
I was like what the ? I hope this is a joke. This is school we are talking about. I do not buy this idea one bit. As a matter of fact I hate it. Why don't we then decide to use spanish examples in Texas since we have so many spanish kids in school here? I think Ebonics in school is a really bad idea. I know a good number of kids that even after graduating high school, they cant construct simple english sentences correctly. They've learned Ebonics all their life and so they are still confused on what is grammatically correct and what is Ebonics. Not saying that I am the queen of English language. As a future parent, I dont want my kids learning Ebonics in school. I dont know maybe its just me. What do you think?
