I don’t know that I can live without music. I mean I am guessing that I can but I don’t think I will ever choose to. Worst case scenario, I would serenade myself. Music has been a part of me as far back as I can remember. The funny thing is that the lyrics come easily to me. I may just need to listen to a song once or twice and I’ll know a good portion of the lyrics. So I’ve questioned why I know a good amount and recently, I’ll have to give credit to the nature of my job. I am forced to fly 6 hours at least on a weekly basis and I typically sleep on the planes. For those days that I can’t sleep, I only have 2 options, read or listen to music. Likewise, my drive to my client site has been about 45 minutes for the last year and since I have decided not to fly with my cds or to place my ipod in my rentals (I’ve forgotten a good chunk of cds in the rentals), I get to listen to the radio and again I hear whats “hot” on the radio.
For the longest, I was a Boyz II Men fan. I could not go a single day without listening to them… I think I’ve outgrown that phase but don’t get it twisted, I don’t care what I am doing, If I hear they are playing close by, I’ll do everything including call in sick to go hear them. And even though I don’t listen to their cds everyday (and yeah, I have every cd except the Spanish cds), whenever any of their songs come up on the radio, I drop everything and have a “moment”.
So I had a Sade phase (because she not only has a great voice but the instruments are phenomenal) and then I had a Seal, Lighthouse family, Luther… (I have to shout out to Luther. I was a major fan, I got to see him perform once) and to show you how bad it was, when he died, my friends called me to check if I was okay (like I was a member of his family or something) and so many others.
To show you how much music is a part of me, I associate people with songs. So if I know someone likes a song, or an artist or they do something really unique when the song is played, they sing a song in a funny way or something, that person is associated with that song forever in my head.
A few songs
• House of Pain - Jump Around – Nene. K, she bursted out dancing once and I cant get that out of my head
• Macy Gray – I try to say goodbye – Ify K…. She hated the song so much I remember her by it
• Lionel Riche? - Easy as Sunday morning – BimBim. she bursted out singing off key one day
• Musical Youth - Pass the Dutchie – Aji A. – I heard her get into the song long before I knew the song
• R. Kelly - Thoia Thong (Remix) – Lady B. – She goes off on her reggae mood.
• T- Pains - Buy U A drink – Ronky A. – Miami – She kept on singing and it kept on coming on the radio too
• Baby Boy the prince – The way I live – O.G. – She couldn’t get the artist name right in Miami but she got into the song
• Back that thing up – Lindsey N. – Yeah, she could not get enough of the song, she also has a special dance
• Fugees entire CD - Femi Om.(Sorry I know like 3 Femi’s), he had like 973297034732947329709 CDs but that was the only one I recognized back in freshman year.
• Frank Sinatra – Fly me to the moon – D.G. Performed a beautiful rendition
• Crazytown - Butterfly - Pearl... She loves Backstreet Boys. This was the first song i know that she liked that was not theirs.
• 2 wrongs - Wyclef and Caramel - I told kene we should sing together and he goes.... Eh Eh Escuse me (off key and all)..... I loved it...
Anyway, I can go on and on. For most of my close friends, I have a couple key songs that remind me of them and so I tend to give them a shout when I hear these songs if I have not spoken to them in a while and in some cases, I just think about that funny moment.
I guess to an extent, hearing a song that reminds me of someone or a place (yeah, I associate trips with songs as well, if something cool happens when a song is played) has a similar effect to looking at a picture of the person. One can almost guess what is going on with me by listening to songs on my radio.
Artists on my iPod’s recently played – Bob Sinclair (World Hold On), Patti Labelle (I can’t make you love me), Doris Day (the way you look tonight), O.G.D. All Stars (Baby Jowo), Lemar(Another Day) and of course old school stuff, I can never get enough of old stuff (80s).
