Ohio…. “Midwest” or Mideast?

So with all of my many travel plans, I got to go to Columbus, Ohio this week for the National Society of Black Engineers Convention. (I was first of all grateful that I got a good reason to get a break away from my project). My company encourages their consulting group to assist with recruiting students for entry level positions.

All I knew about Ohio State is that its Bow Wow’s hometown and it is the Midwest … I came to find out that it is referred to as “the show me state”. I also thought that they were on Central Time. I found out that they are on Eastern. Someone needs to explain to me why the Midwest is more on the eastern side of the country?
Anyway, I’ve always thought recruiting was/is fun, students who have no idea what consulting is and who don’t know anything about Accenture come by looking for internships or entry level positions. When you do this often enough, you can see a student and from their introductory spill, you can guess their GPA (which of course is a major criterion for us to determine how well they are doing in school). You can also tell if a student has no idea of what the company is and that they are trying to wing their way through to get an interview. I’ve noticed that students get bolder every year, walking up to recruiters and demanding interviews. All in all I admit that even though I think I am personally quiet, I have learned that I like being around people. I draw some kind of strength from people’s company/presence. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the “ME” time I get but I very much enjoy other people’s company as well.

Anyway as co-team lead for the recruiting event this year, I got to plan and coordinate some events and I have learned that I have a good grasp of that but I’d rather not plan. I took a few pictures of the team members and I have posted them below. I didn’t get to tour much of the city because of all the hours we had to put in recruiting but I got to go to “Martini’s” a very nice upscale and fancy restaurant and bar, located right in the middle of down town.
